A living shoreline
for a freshwater lake.

Use methods suited to Smith Lake’s bank, water levels and habitat—not a copied saltwater planting plan.

What does “living shoreline” mean here?

Owners often use the phrase for banks that combine vegetation with erosion protection. At Smith Lake, ask about Alabama Power’s approved natural stabilization methods and whether ENS applies. Coastal oyster or mangrove designs do not translate into a freshwater reservoir plan.

The useful question is which treatment the parcel can support and the reviewer will allow. A natural appearance is not proof that work is permit-free.

What can an owner do before construction?

Keep an existing vegetated buffer intact while the project is reviewed. Document runoff paths, exposed soil and vegetation that may be affected by equipment. Ask a qualified local plant professional about species appropriate to the site.

Alabama Power’s ENS guide includes native trees and shrubs, protects existing vegetation and calls for material from appropriate sources. Do not harvest shoreline rock for a new treatment.

How should you evaluate a proposal?

  • Ask how the design addresses the actual erosion process.
  • Confirm the approved footprint and habitat conditions.
  • Request a planting and establishment plan with responsibilities.
  • Keep drainage and upland soil stabilization in the contract.
  • Agree on maintenance observations and the approval needed for future changes.

Compare the shoreline options and read the ENS guide summary before selecting the final scope.
