How do you know whether your lot is affected?
Ask Alabama Power to review the exact parcel and work limits. Do not infer habitat status from a neighbor’s wall, a general map or a lack of visible turtles. Sensitive-resource designations can carry special written conditions.
Keep the determination with the proposed plan and request a clear explanation of the allowed method. This is useful when two contractors propose different treatments.
What is enhanced natural stabilization?
ENS uses an arrangement of rock, wood and native vegetation designed to stabilize the shoreline while preserving habitat features. Alabama Power publishes a contractor guide linked from its current Smith Lake page.
The guide is specific about materials and installation. Owners should ask for a proposal that names the approved approach and how it will be documented. A homeowner checklist cannot replace the permit or a qualified site design.
What does the Brushy Creek example show?
Alabama Power’s 2022 article describes owners near Brushy Creek in Winston County using ENS to address an eroding bank. It is a useful local example of an alternative to a vertical wall.
It does not establish the current condition of that site, the cost of your project or the classification of other Brushy Creek properties. Ask about your own lot rather than treating the example as a permit precedent.

What should the contract say about timing and care?
Confirm the allowed work dates and pre- and post-work contacts. The published guide describes November 1–March 31 for identified potential habitat; the issued permit governs your project.
Include follow-up observations of stone movement, erosion and plant survival. Ask who replaces failed plants and how future work is approved. The natural bank service guide explains what to include in the scope.
