What does Alabama Power prefer?
The residential guidelines prefer riprap and natural bank stabilization, while considering seawalls case by case. That makes the permit conversation an early design step. A desired lawn edge alone does not establish that a vertical wall is appropriate.
Have the professional explain the slope, retained soil, water exposure, drainage and available access. If habitat conditions require ENS, evaluate that complete system before comparing cosmetic finishes.

What changes between the options?
| Approach | Discuss with the designer | Keep in the scope |
|---|---|---|
Vertical wall | Retained height, foundation, drainage and approval eligibility. | Toe, anchors if used, cap, ends and backfill. |
Riprap | Available slope, stone specification and filter detail. | Toe, transitions, delivery and disturbed-ground stabilization. |
Enhanced natural stabilization | Habitat designation, approved method and work dates. | Rock, wood, vegetation and follow-up maintenance. |
These are scope questions, not design instructions. Do not choose stone size or wall embedment from a general website table.

How should you compare cost?
Compare installed scopes covering the same length and responsibilities. Ask what land area each approach occupies, what vegetation remains and how each meets the approved shoreline line. Include access and restoration in all options.
A lower construction subtotal may exclude planting, drainage or removal. Use the budget planner to keep those differences visible.
Which maintenance questions matter?
Ask how to inspect the chosen system safely and which changes warrant a professional review. For natural stabilization, record plant survival and stone movement. For a wall, keep track of joints, cap changes, settlement and outlets.
All options need a clear record of the approved work. Existing permission and recurring maintenance are separate questions; check before disturbing the shoreline.
